Sardinas en Lata GIGANTE!

While at the grocery store picking up a few things for my wife I made it a point to travel to the Mexican aisle and pick up a can of Perla Pacifica Sardinas en Salsa de Tomate Picante. One huge ass can of fish. We're talking fifteen ounces while your typical can of sardines are 3.75 ounces. This can is intimidating. After the kids went to bed I got ready to watch Transsiberian and prepared a plate with some cheese and some Zesta's. I poured a bottle of Paulaner Salvator Double Bock into a glass and grabbed some El Yucateco Salsa Picante de Chile Habanero (the green stuff), not to mention the "laundry" I had to do to put my appetite into overdrive.

Opening the can reveals a large number of big sardines not organized neatly in the can but floating freely in a watery red and somewhat spicy sauce. Texture is firm and extremely meaty while not at all mushy. They taste good with a clean and pleasant finish but could use a touch more salt. They're not incredibly fishy which was a surprise. The cons would be the sheer size of the can and the large amount of sauce. I'd be more apt to buy these again if they came in a smaller tin. I mean you'd really need a group of sardine hungry friends to finish one of these cans and not waste any. The can is brimming with sauce which can get messy and difficult to keep your fish in order. Removing the sardines from the can may be the way to go here.

I would definitely recommend these if you were entertaining and your guests were fans of the Lowly Tinned Sardine.

We'll have to get these for SALTS-Con 09, which was going to be in an abandoned cannery in Monterey. Steinbeck's Ghost was going to be our key speaker. Our musical line up included Slovakian Punk rockers Retarded Fish and teen Grungers Fish Food. But all the fisheries are gone now replaced by condos, so we have to find a new place, probobly in Portland.
Great Review.

If y'all know how to ride bikes and are serious about this Monterey thing...I kow a spot in the woods where you can eat your fishes trailside with a view over the bay.

It's more along the lines of where the hobos rested in "Cannery Row" on their way to Carmel, but I guess that's appropriate here.

Did you read the about the Inversion Excursion? A night owl like you should appreciate it. Wish I could have been there.

I'll be down in the Bay in April and will bring my 'cross bike.

How about we take the kids to the aquarium in the morning, and later, the Rev can show us some of his secret spots?

I'll bring the LRP's...

The Inversion Excursion seems like my, uh, can of fish. Good Times.

As to a ramble in Monterey, y'all consider it on whenever you get here.
